The Cedars Breast Clinic: a comprehensive health care dream come true

The Cedars Breast Clinic of the MUHC is a major regional and supra-regional referral center for patients diagnosed with breast disease. As a university health center, it participates in the critical multi-centric clinical research trials that shape the future of breast cancer care. It delivers state-of–the art treatments to patients and educates future health care professionals. However, its unique attribute is the convergence of all critical elements required for the delivery of a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plan at the first visit.

At the Cedars Clinic, we realize that patients suffer a significant amount of anxiety and stress from delays, repeated visits and a lack of a clear plan. Therefore, we are organized to deliver a single stop diagnosis and a course of action. Women with suspicious lesions are seen within two weeks by a surgical oncologist specializing in breast cancer. Required mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies are completed at that first visit and on-site, to avoid unnecessary and stressful returns. Before leaving, patients also receive personalized counseling on their breast health by our specialized nurse clinicians. In addition, Cedars Cansupport volunteers are on-hand to accompany and provide emotional support to patients and their families.

At the Cedars Breast Clinic, we believe that details matter when dealing with breast cancer. A healing environment, the clinic is designed to maximize entry of natural light. We offerexceptional views of downtown Montreal, soothing colors and fresh cut flowers are delivered daily. The Clinic participates in the "Arts for Healing" program housing many photographs and paintings from well-known Montreal artists.

With the support of charity initiatives such as the Jump for Hope, the Cedars Breast Clinic provides patients with important tools in comprehensive care and healing. Under the banner of the Cedars "Body, Mind & Spirit" initiative, patients are given access to a psycho-oncologist, provided with an informative, practical and supportive Breast Cancer Navigation Kit as well as a free membership with our partner in fitness - CURVES, where patients are monitored and evaluated under scientific research. True to our global breast health mission, in 2010 the Cedars Breast Clinic will continue development of "Body, Mind, Spirit" by expanding the professional services of its on-site kinesiologist helping to reduce the effects of lymphedema as well as a providing access to a nutritionist, yoga classes and other healing therapies.

Meet the Director of the Cedars Breast Clinic

Over the last 2 decades significant advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. In 2009 a woman diagnosed with breast cancer has an 80% chance of survival. These advances would not have been possible without comprehensive “one-stop” breast centers such as the Cedars Breast Clinic of the MUHC. This marvelous facility, founded in 2001, brings together experienced surgeons, radiologists, radiology technicians and nurses along with state-of-the-art equipment to provide patients of the MUHC with timely and efficient breast cancer care.

As the management of this horrible disease has gradually improved the team at the Cedars Clinic has turned its attention to the patient herself. We now realize that we must not only cure the disease but heal the patient. With innovative approaches such as the use of a psycho-oncologist specializing in the care of breast cancer patients and the development of an educational tool called the Breast Cancer Navigation Kit we have tried to improve the long and sometimes arduous journey of our patients from diagnosis to cure. Most recently we have provided our patients with an opportunity to participate in a regular exercise regime free of charge with our landmark MUHC-CURVES agreement. Recently published studies clearly indicate that regular exercise can not only improve the psychological outlook of patients but can also lead to improved survival.

With the continued support of donors like yourselves we will be able to expand our Survivorship Program to continue to provide the option of regular exercise but to also expand it to include dietetic support and lymphedema treatment. These are two crucial aspects of the total body care that the Cedars Breast Clinic wishes to provide its patients so that we can remain, after 2 decades, a state-of-the-art facility for the cure and healing of this chronic disease called breast cancer.
