Med Student Ran Tao to climb Mount Kilimajaro for Cedars CanSupport
Third year med student Ran Tao was inspired while participating in the Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Festival to do more for cancer patients and their loved ones. After seeing how much CanSupport has helped her dear friend with his own struggle, Ran Tao has decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and money for the cause.
My name is Ran Tao and I am a third year medical student. There was a point during my med school journey that I realized what the diseases we learn about in our classrooms really mean--that someone out there is suffering. We learn about statistics like one in three women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lives, but little do we expect that any of those people would be someone we know.
This is the story of a dear friend of mine, who lost his father to cancer while his spouse had just been diagnosed with it. I have seen him struggle in the fight against cancer and although he was not the one with the disease, bearing the weight of a loved one's illness was overwhelmingly difficult. Despite everything, he found the strength to organize a Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat fundraising team in honour of his loved ones.
While advances are being made to find a cure and to prevent the disease from happening, for those fighting cancer in the present, prevention is already far in the past, and the hope for a cure is ahead in the future. In the few occasions where I have humbly announced a cancer diagnosis to a patient, I could offer treatment and counselling, although I felt the newly diagnosed need more than that and I wished I could do more for them. After participating in the fundraising event for Cedars CanSupport in honour of that dear friend of mine, I witnessed the immense strength and empowerment that this kind of program can provide patients and their families. This friend of mine, who has given to and benefited so much from Cedars CanSupport inspired me to do more for others in similar situations. I now feel that I am ready to give just a little more to those who need it.
My goal is not only to raise funds for the cause, but also to raise awareness, so that we all realize how important support can be, no matter what the struggle.
I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in honour of my dear friend, his loved ones, and all the other people out there fighting.
Cancer is one of those things that you cannot see coming and it can touch anyone. Not only does it touch the person suffering from it, but it also affects their loved ones. Fighting cancer is not only about research or therapy, but it is also about support. Please make the battle against cancer easier by showing your support. Thank you!
