Steve Patterson headlines in Montreal to once again prove laughter is the second best medicine

It’s getting close to that time o’ year again in Montreal: A colourful parade full of mischievous Leprachauns, pubs full of Irish and would-be Irish libation lovers and a headline weekend with Canada’s top Irish-Canadian comedian Steve Patterson, appearing March 10 at Bourbon St. West and March 11-13 at Ernie Butler’s Comedy Nest.

As a special bonus, Patterson’s headline run this year will benefit more than just fun-seekers as portions of proceeds will be donated directly to the Sarah Cook Fund at the Cedars Cancer Institute.

Canadian comedy fans are well aware of Patterson’s path, having begun on a dare from university dorm mates and a timely firing from his full-time copywriting job. His Just For Laughs gala appearances in 2004 and 2007 have made him a fan favourite of the festival, solidified with his recent performances on the Just For Laughs National Road Tour last Fall. And he remains the one and only comedian to have qualified for the National Finals of NBC’s Last Comic Standing and forsake the opportunity to honour his headline commitment for Ernie Butler.

Since his fateful decision to stand-up against NBC Patterson’s comedy career has taken a stand of its own. He landed the coveted host’s chair of CBC Radio One’s hit national radio show “The Debaters” in 2007 which he still hosts today, he has toured three times to Australia and back to Ireland where he has become a fan favourite as well. And his travel schedule includes regular stops all across the continent including an upcoming appearance in Vancouver during the Olympics.

Most recently, Patterson signed on as a “comedy correspondent” with CBC News Network where his weekly rantings on Friday evenings during “Connect with Mark Kelley” are earning him even more fans across the CBC viewing world.

But still, the St. Patrick’s weekend at the Comedy Nest in Montreal holds a special spot in Steve’s heart. This is the club he chose over a shot at American television exposure. In fact, The Comedy Nest is one of the very, very few club venues that Patterson still plays in Canada, usually opting for festival appearances and theatre engagements these days. When asked why, Patterson’s response is immediate: I do it to honour Ernie and to honour Silver, who have run and continue to run the most respectable comedy room in Canada.”

In August 2009, Steve Patterson preformed live at Bourbon Street West, proving laughter is the second best medicine.  "I was heart-broken to learn Sarah's cancer had returned a second time.  She is such a remarkable young women and has given so much to help other children, that I had to do something," expressed Patterson.  Laughter filled the room for a cause all started by a girl who warms the hearts of so many.  Over $10,000 was raised in support of four cyclists riding on behalf of the Sarah Cook Fund in the 2009 Cedars Tour de Lance.

About The Sarah Cook Fund
The Sarah Cook Fund of the Cedars Cancer Institute supports the haematology/oncology division at The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH). The Sarah Cook Fund was started in 2001 by Sarah Cook, an eight-year-old girl battling Ewing’s Sarcoma who was determined to make it a little easier for the other children on the floor by buying new pillows. Sarah’s Fund gained momentum and continues to support the efforts of the professionals who make a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of children and their families every year. The Fund addresses the pressing needs of Sarah’s Floor, the in-patient haematology/oncology division at The Montreal Children's Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), with positive results including: renovations and upgrades of "Sarah's Floor”; development and support of Art Therapy; providing humanitarian resources through Sarah’s Fund for Families; participation in the acquisition of the first Intra-Operative MRI in Quebec at the MCH, an invaluable tool in the care and treatment of children with brain tumours; continuing education for nurses; and much more. www.sarahcookfund.com
