Chair's Message

I am proud to have assumed the chairmanship of Cedars at the start of our 50th anniversary year. This is an occasion to reflect on our remarkable growth while renewing our commitment to leading the fight against cancer and setting an aggressive but realistic path forward.

What began with a small and dedicated group of community-minded individuals, who joined forces to fight cancer, including my parents has grown into a world-class foundation. Year after year, we have led the way with initiatives such as the creation of the Edward J. Tabah Oncology Day Centre, the Cedars Breast Clinic and Cedars CanSupport as well as the purchase of leading edge equipment like the Da Vinci Surgical Robot, the gamma cameras for nuclear medicine and more recently the M6 Cyberknife.

Perhaps our greatest gift to the Quebec community is the Cedars Cancer Centre where our talented team is reinventing the way cancer treatment is provided through the continuum of life, from our youngest patients to geriatric care. Conceived and designed around the patient, it has become an integrated hub for Cancer treatment that allows our medical professionals to be pioneers in diagnosis and treatment while providing patients with the highest level of care and support under one roof.

But the need for our support keeps growing.

Today, with over 180,000 yearly visits, cancer care represents about one third of the McGill University Health Centre’s patient volumes, and demand is expected to continue to keep growing.

That is why we have launched our $50 million capital campaign, chaired by Andrew Lutfy, CEO of Group Dynamite, and Bruce Shadeed, President of Travelway Group and my predecessor as Chair of Cedars.

Our immediate priority is the Cedars Oncology Supportive Care Centre. Conveniently located adjacent to the Cedars Cancer Centre and easily accessible, this $10 million project brings together existing programs and services, ensuring continuity of care among the various multi-disciplinary teams that follow patients and their families. Clinicians will be working side by side with the patient’s health care team, providing cancer patients with clinical care as well as emotional, psychological and practical support, complementary therapies and educational services.

We have set our sights on a healthier future! This requires more funding for innovative cancer research, compassionate personalized patient care and inspiring education.  Thanks to the ongoing support of our volunteers, our donors and our sponsors, the participants at our signature events, I am confident that Cedars will continue to make a major difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families. I trust that we can continue to count on your support, and urge you to give generously.
