12th CIBC 401 Bike Challenge raises over $200,000 thanks to Piccoli Family Initiative

More than thirty cyclists braved heat and rain and biked over 576 KM from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto to the Montreal Children’s Hospital from August 10th to 12th.
Additional riders joined the peloton in Cornwall for the home stretch to Montreal. Upon their arrival at the Montreal Children’s Hospital’s P.K. Subban Atrium, they were greeted by a large crowd which included former Stanley Cup winning Montreal Canadiens and hockey legend Chris “Knuckles” Nilan.

Thanks to the sweat and tears of these dedicated riders, over $200,000 was raised for Sarah’s Fund for Cedars and the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation, bringing the event’s total to over $2 million since its inception 12 years ago. The Piccoli family and their dedicated group of riders helped raise vital funds for the pediatric Hematology/Oncology division of the Montreal Children’s Hospital. As well, a donation is being made to the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto.

Cedars wishes to thank all the riders, donors, special guests and sponsors. Special thanks to Angie and Gene Piccoli and their children James and Lauren for their continued commitment and dedication to helping children with cancer.

About the Piccoli Family Fund

In recognition of the Piccoli family’s outstanding contribution to Pediatric Oncology, the Cedars Cancer Foundation launched the Piccoli Family Fund in 2011. The Piccoli Family Fund’s primary mission is to support Pediatric Oncology through Sarah’s Fund for Cedars. As the Piccoli Family’s CIBC 401 Bike Challenge continues to grow, the Fund will also support additional oncology initiatives through the Cedars Cancer Foundation. As a result funds are now being allocated to both the Montreal Children’s Hospital and Toronto Sick Kids Pediatric Oncology Programs.

Sarah’s Fund for Cedars

In 2001, Sarah’s Fund of Cedars joined forces with the Montreal Children’s Hospital Hematology / Oncology division. It was created as a tribute to Sarah Cook, an 8-year-old undergoing treatment for Ewing’s Sarcoma at the Montreal’s Children’s Hospital. Family and friends were inspired by Sarah’s determination to help ease the treatment for the other children on the floor by raising funds to buy new pillows. Sarah’s Fund for Cedars was formed in support of the efforts of the professionals who make a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of children and their families every year and to address the pressing needs of the In-Patient Hematology/Oncology Division at the Montreal’s Children’s Hospital of the MUHC.

Sarah’s Fund for Cedars has raised over $9 million dollars to date with the help of The Piccoli Family Fund, the CIBC 401 Bike Challenge, and many other community events. The funds have helped to build Sarah’s Floor at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Sarah’s Fund also supports ongoing programs such as the Buddy Blanket Program, Animal & Music Therapy, Continuing Education for Nurses, equipment purchases (intra-Operative MRI and pediatric head-ring), as well as providing support to families in need. They ensure that the urgent and day-to-day needs of the patients on Sarah’s Floor are cared for.
