Tanya’s Tupperware for a Cause
“She is now my source of strength. She is the reason I am now raising money to benefit the Cedars Cancer Centre. To Deb, so you may continue to touch many more lives. You will never be forgotten.”
Hi, my name is Tanya and I am an employee at the Cedars Cancer Centre. My world took an unexpected turn almost three years ago when a dear friend of mine, Debralee Ruiz, shared the news with me that she was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away on July 24th, 2016. Everyday I am in direct contact with cancer patients and wanted to find a way to honour Debbie while giving back to cancer patients. This led me to start my own Tupperware fundraiser and I so named it “Tanya’s Tupperware Funding for a Cause”.
In her short time here on earth, Debralee Ruiz radiated so much love to those around her and inspired anyone she encountered. She shared a particularly strong bond with her brother Zaldy and her father who were by her side until the very end and an unconditional love for her mother, sister Larissa and beautiful niece Maliyah. Her humility, selflessness, vibrant spirit as well as an infectious laugh, made her so unique and so well liked. Born in Montreal, Debbie was an outstanding basketball player by nature. She eventually brought her talents to the east coast and was a point guard for the Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers. Debbie was a dominant force on the court, leading the team to the AUS championship final in 2006. She was an outstanding student athlete and an all around team player, never hesitating to help out her younger teammates. Her generosity didn’t end there, her tenacity and love for the game allowed her to connect with the Montreal basketball community back home. This enabled her to forge lasting relationships with many young girls while playing an instrumental role in their talent and character development on and off the court.
