MONTRÉAL, Monday, June 19, 2023 – 264 golfers hit the links at the Royal Montreal Golf Club today for the 44th annual Cedars Golf Classic, raising over $525,000 to support innovation and excellence in surgical oncology at the MUHC’s Cedars Cancer Centre, the Montreal General Hospital (MGH).

“We were delighted to join forces, once again, with the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, as organizing partners of the annual Cedars Golf Classic,” stated Jeff J. Shamie, President and CEO of the Cedars Cancer Foundation. “The funds raised today will be used to endow the Peter Abraham Cedars Surgical Oncology Fellowship, which will allow us to recruit a world-class surgical oncology fellow every year, in perpetuity, and will ensure that the MUHC’s oncology teams have access access the best surgical training and technologies.”

“Philanthropy plays a catalytic role in empowering excellence and innovation,” noted Dr. Lucie Opatrny, President and Executive Director of the MUHC. “We are therefore grateful to our foundations and to their generous donors for helping our Cancer Care Mission teams to develop best-in-class care, including benefiting from world-class oncologic surgical training.”

“Our two foundations are deeply committed to eradicating illness and saving lives by funding research, education, technology, treatment, and care at the MGH-MUHC,” added Stéphanie Riddell, President and CEO of the Montreal General Hospital Foundation. “This partnership is a natural fit, and it allows us to fulfill our mission of providing vital support for vital care in oncology.”

This year’s golf tournament was co-chaired by Demo Trifanopolous, Paul Sawaya, Andrew Carter, Dominic Costantini, and Kim Anderson. “It’s an honour to be part of an event that supports such an important cause,” they said. “Cancer touches everyone, in some way, so it’s rewarding to help raise funds that will have a real impact on cancer treatment and care at the Cedars Cancer Centre and the Montreal General Hospital,” they added.

“A very special thank-you goes out to our co-chairs, organizers and volunteers, who put a tremendous effort into the tournament to ensure its success. We also wish to convey our heartfelt gratitude our partners, donors and advertisers, whose funding was critical,” added Jeff Shamie.

“We are also very grateful to our host, the Royal Montreal Golf Club, for their generosity and professionalism – and for providing such a spectacular setting for our event,” concluded Stéphanie.
