Over 600 paddlers took on the Lachine Canal at the 14th Annual FL Fuller Landau Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race and Festival

Montreal, QC, Sept. 9, 2019 – Last Saturday, the 14th edition of the FL Fuller Landau Dragon Boat Race & Festival, in support of Cedars CanSupport program, successfully raised over $425,000 and counting! All funds will benefit Cedars CanSupport, providing free psychological, emotional, practical and financial support to cancer patients and their families at the Cedars Cancer Centre of the McGill University Health Center (MUHC).

“For more than fifty years, Cedars has become a leader in the fight against cancer,” said Jeff J. Shamie, President and CEO of the Cedars Cancer Foundation. “The FL Fuller Landau Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race & Festival helps us with our mission of providing our cancer patients and their families with the best care, treatment and supportive care services.”

Staged on and along the Promenade Père-Marquette in Lachine, hundreds of spectators at the paddlers’ village buzzed with enthusiasm as they watched the Dragon Boat teams partake in two qualifying races before heading into the final rounds later in the afternoon. The Mayor of the Borough of Lachine, Mayor Maja Vodanovic, and the Mayor of Westmount, Mayor Christina Smith, were joined by fellow council members as they attended the symbolic flower ceremony honouring those who have bravely fought their battle or are navigating their cancer diagnosis. Onsite activities such as concession stands, music, live entertainment and a Kids Zone were also available for everyone to enjoy.

This year, Camp Nominingue Alumni Team came in first place with 51.65 seconds, followed by Happy Paddlers at 55.21 seconds and Dusty Paddles at 56.79 seconds.

Winning on the water isn’t the teams’ only goal. With a total of 24 boats, 20 paddlers come together to create a Dragon Boat team and fundraise to raise a minimum of $12,500 per boat prior to Race Day ($625 per paddler). The FL Fuller Landau Flowing Flames were the top fundraising team with a total of $72,532 raised.

Founded in 2006, the Cedars Dragon Boat Race & Festival began with six boats and $12,000 raised. It has now grown into an event of more than 24 boats, with over $6 million raised to date.

“FL Fuller Landau is proud to celebrate its 12th year anniversary as the presenting sponsor and active participant of the Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race and Festival,” said Jaimie Auger, Event Chair. “Every year we like to push the boundaries, take this event a step further and we couldn’t be more grateful for everyone’s ongoing commitment and dedication.”
