Jim Murdoch Legacy Fund

The Jim Murdoch Legacy Fund was established by Jim’s family, in partnership with the Cedars Cancer Foundation, to support the Division of Supportive and Palliative Care at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).

During Jim’s final months, his family experienced firsthand the extraordinary compassion, dignity, and comfort provided by the palliative care team; care that extended beyond Jim himself to support the entire family through one of life’s most difficult journeys.

The fund was created to help ensure that other patients, families, and caregivers receive that same exceptional level of care. The fund’s goal is to raise $500,000 to support programs and improvements that go beyond what the hospital’s budget can provide.

For patients, this means access to music therapy, massage therapy, and professional psychological support; services that ease pain and anxiety and bring moments of comfort and dignity that traditional care alone cannot offer.

For families, it means a better everyday experience while keeping vigil beside a loved one, with practical comforts such as comfortable roll-away beds for overnight stays.

For the department itself, it means a refreshed family room, from updated appliances to a dedicated music station, kept warm and welcoming for every family who passes through it, for years to come. In recognition of this support, the family room on the palliative care unit will be named after Jim, so that his legacy may live on and inspire future generations.

Every donation to the Jim Murdoch Legacy Fund helps carry forward Jim’s legacy of compassion, generosity, and hope, and directly improves the experience of palliative care for patients, families, and caregivers at the MUHC.
